El Salvador registers average of 11 murders daily
El Salvador has registered 320 murders so far in the first month of this year, an average of 11 murders daily, the country's National Civil Police (PNC) said Thursday.
According to information reaching here from San Salvador, the crime rate went up in the cities of Sonsonate and Chalatenango.
In the cities of Quezaltepeque and Colon, murders have also been multiplied in the past few days, police said.
The PNC said that juvenile gangs were behind some of the killings.
El Salvador has one of the highest murder rates in Latin America. In 2008, the number of murders reached 3,175; in 2007 2,497, and in 2006 3,618.
