Homeland Security Announces the Re-Extension
to 217,000 Salvadorans that are under TPS
New immigration guidelines to avoid family separation signal major shift
in immigration policy of President Barack Obama
The Department of Homeland Security is announcing the designation of El Salvador
for an extension of 18 months of the Temporary Protected Status program
that benefits 217,000 Salvadorans nationals that live and work in the United States.
The announcement is made before the official conclusion of the program on March 9, 2012
and within the window period of 60 days that begins on January 9, 2012, and after
it is published in the Federal Registry, which will happen on that date.
The reasoning of the re-extension of the TPS program for Salvadoran nationals
is because the original conditions remain.
In another immigration important matter, President Barack Obama is announcing
today a major change in the waiver/pardon policy that will allow relatives of U.S.
citizens to wait in the United States to obtain the visa to live legally in the United
States instead of waiting abroad until they receive an appointment from the
consular office abroad.
The government of President Mauricio Funes has made a petition to President
Barack Obama for the re-extension of this vital and important program that
allows the beneficiaries to continue live and work legally in the United States
for another 18 month, from March 9, 2012 to September 9, 2013.
The leaders of the Honduran, Nicaraguan and Salvadoran communities of Southern
California are requesting to President Barack Obama and to Secretary Janet
Napolitano to extend for 30 days the re-registration period for over 25,000
Honduran nationals that have not been able to re-register due to unemployment,
unable to pay the fees required, and other reasons.
